Indoor Plants: Why We Need Them!

There are many benefits to keeping indoor plants, not only do they enhance the overall appearance of a space and add some personality and warmth into a room, but they have many other benefits including making us feel good!

Below are seven benefits of keeping indoor plants:

  1. Reducing stress levels – studies have found that plants in your home or office can make you feel more comfortable and relaxed.
  2. May sharpen your attention – studies have also shown that students and workers, studying/working in an environment with real, live plants had heightened attention levels.
  3. Therapeutic – for people experiencing the symptoms of mental illness, indoor gardening can be helpful. Horticultural therapy has been used to increase feelings of well-being amongst people with depression, anxiety, and even dementia.  Medical clinics in Manchester, England are now ‘prescribing’ potted plants to patients with depression or anxiety symptoms and are recording positive results.
  4. Improve air quality – there is scientific support for phytoremediation (plants removing contaminants from the air). Researchers from NASA conducted a study in the 1980s looking for ways to improve the air quality in a sealed spacecraft, and they concluded the roots and soil of houseplants reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) significantly. They help clean indoor air by absorbing toxins, increasing humidity, and producing oxygen.
  5. Aesthetic appeal – healthy, well-cared for indoor plants add ‘life’ and vitality to a room, as well as infusing colour and warmth into a space. They are, in themselves, a work-of-art, compliments of Mother Nature.
  6. Cost-Effective – depending on which plants you choose; they are generally not expensive to purchase or maintain. You can spend as much, or as little, as your budget permits, and still basically obtain the same outcome.
  7. Boost overall happiness – the culmination of all the above, subtly works its magic to promote positivity and feelings of contentment and well-being.

Just a footnote to the above, it is important when selecting your indoor plants to check for toxicity, particularly if you have children or pets in the home, and also if you have allergies or asthma, be alert to species that aggravate your symptoms.
